The University of Bergen aims to appear visually as a single organisation in our communication with the outside world. The graphic profile will contribute towards this and is an important means of building our profile and identity. Proper use ensures that our visual outward appearance is uniform and recognisable. The profile consists of some defined profile components and a set of simple rules.
When should the graphic profile be used?
The graphic profile is to be used by the entire organisation and on all digital or printed surfaces where UiB is the official sender. Examples include web pages, videos, documents, brochures, papers, publications, business cards, etc., for internal or external use.
The individual departments/units are responsible for seeing to that the profile is used properly. When in doubt, speak with you immediate superior.
In the event you are uncertain about the use of the graphic profile and logo, please contact the UiB Communication Division (this also applies to new websites). All exceptions, both for digital and printed surfaces, should be approved by the Communication Division.
In the event you are uncertain about the use of the graphic profile and logo, please contact the UiB Communication Division (this also Communication Division.
Use of logo/emblem
The University of Bergen’s logo/emblem shall be applied to digital and printed surfaces where UiB is the formal sender. Examples include web pages, videos, documents, brochures, papers, publications, business cards, etc., for internal or external use.
Own logos are not allowed for any academic entities, administrative entities or research units. The use of special logos undermines the effort to build a holistic profile for the University of Bergen.
If there is any uncertainty about using a logo, please contact the Communication Division. All exceptions, for both digital and printed surfaces, should be approved by the Communication Division.
If students wish to use the graphic profile, approval must be obtained from the Communication Division.
UiB in cooperative relationships
There is a broad diversity of activities at UiB. These may include cooperation between several universities, factors related to financing, or participation in enterprises that differ from the university’s core mission. In these cases, there may be a need to have special considerations in mind when using the profile/logo.
UiB as the principal stakeholder
If UiB is the principal stakeholder in a cooperative relationship, it is important to communicate this clearly. An example of this might be a collaboration under the auspices of UiB with external stakeholders. As a general rule, UiB’s graphic profile is to be used.
UiB as an equal partner
The general rule is that equal partners are to be profiled on an equal basis. An example of this might be a collaborative project in which different universities are equal partners. In this case, as a rule, UiB’s graphic profile is not to be used.
UiB as a supporter
If UiB is a supporter, it is important not to profile UiB as a primary stakeholder. As a general rule, UiB’s graphic profile is not to be used.
In the event you are uncertain about the use of the graphic profile and logo, please contact the UiB Communication Division.
Images/Photographs
Images are an important tool in the visual profiling of the University of Bergen. Use photographs mainly taken at UiB; these will be more authentic than ones from photo agencies.
Use pictures of people at UiB in situations that show involvement, activity and dedication. One excellent institutional motif is the University Museum in Bergen. Feel free to use images of the building, but preferably combined with people actively doing something.
In many cases new privacy policies (GDPR) require documented consent for the use of images. For more information, please see this page.
The University of Bergen has signed an agreement pertaining to illustration and portrait photos with various photographers. More info on this can be found under Images/Photos (framework agreement photographers and photo archive).
Please contact the Communication Division if you have any questions about the use of images.
