This guide is for you who will be publishing an info page on www4.uib.no. It covers editorial guidelines for content quality and universal design, as well as practical help for filling in the fields in the publishing tool.

Part 1: Editorial guidelines

Here you’ll find requirements and recommendations for content quality, images, video, and text structure. These apply to all info pages.

Universal design

We are legally required to ensure that our websites are universally designed. Some of this is solved technically, but much depends on how you publish your content.

  • Always write in the correct language for the correct language version. English content on Norwegian pages (or vice versa) breaches universal design requirements.
  • Link texts must be descriptive – the user should understand where the link leads before clicking.
  • Avoid images containing text, especially as a main image.
  • Video must have audio description.

Images

  • Consider whether the page actually needs an image.
  • Choose images that are relevant to the content of the text.
  • Use images from UiB’s own image archive.
  • Use new and up-to-date images.
  • Avoid stock photos.
  • Do not use images generated by artificial intelligence.
  • Do not use images or illustrations that contain text.

Always add alternative text (alt text) for images that convey meaningful information. Leave the alt text empty only for purely decorative images.

See UiB’s graphic profile for more guidelines on image use

You can add videos from Panopto, Vimeo, and YouTube. All videos must meet the requirements for audio description.

Note: We recommend Panopto or Vimeo for videos with traditional audio description, since YouTube currently does not support uploading a separate audio track.

Text structure and formatting

Good structure makes it easier for the reader to understand and navigate the content.

Headings

  • The page title is automatically Heading 1.
  • Use Heading 2 for the main level in the text, Heading 3 for the level below.
  • Don’t skip levels (e.g. from Heading 2 directly to Heading 4).
  • Headings should be short, precise, and informative.

Lists

  • Use bullet points or numbered lists to highlight individual points.
  • Keep the points short and concise.
  • Avoid nested lists (lists within lists).
  • Limit the number of points per list.

Links

  • Don’t include more links than necessary.
  • Minimize links leading away from uib.no.
  • Only link to pages that are relevant to the content.
  • The link text should always describe the destination of the link – avoid “click here.”

Part 2: Publishing tool

Here you get an overview of all the fields and sections you can fill in when creating or editing an info page in the publishing tool.

Page settings

Version log

Write a short summary of what you changed in this version, e.g. “Updated images and contact info.” This is used for internal tracking only.

Language (required)

The info page can be created in Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk), English, or both languages. Make sure the correct language is used in the correct language version, and don’t mix Nynorsk and Bokmål on the same page.

Placement in structure (required)

Choose which parent page this info page should be placed under. This controls the site’s hierarchy and navigation.

Content owners (required)

You must add two content owners for the page. In the “Communications owner” field, enter the person who owns the page. In the “Subject matter owner” field, enter the person responsible for ensuring the content is correct and up to date.

Metadata (SEO)

Add a meta title and meta description if the title or lead text is long. These texts appear in search engines and help Google and users understand the content.

Meta title: shown in search engines (max 60 characters).
Meta description: shown in search results (max 160 characters).

Top section

Title (required)

Write a short and precise title. It must be unique, and you should avoid using years.

Lead text (required)

Write a short summary of the page content. We recommend a maximum of 400 characters including spaces.

Media element

You can add one image or one video in the top section. Consider whether the page actually needs it.

For images: fill in alt text if the image conveys meaningful information, leave it empty for purely decorative images. You can also add a caption.

For video: you must provide the link to the video. You can add a video description below the video. Remember the accessibility requirement for audio description and captioning of video.

Actions

You can add links or buttons in the top section. Recommendation: links for navigation, buttons for actions. You can have a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 2. For each action you must provide a URL and a link or button title.

Main section (Blocks)

To add content to the main section, go to the menu option “Layout” and click “Add block.” The button is always located below all content that has been added. You can add the following blocks:

  • Accordion list
  • Fact box
  • Contact box
  • Link list (simple)
  • Text

Accordion list

An accordion list lets the user show and hide content by clicking on the headings. It’s intended for content that expands on a topic – not for content that’s so important it shouldn’t be hidden. We recommend a maximum of one accordion list per page.

Title (required)

Create a short title that describes what can be found in the accordion list.

Accordion items (required)

Each item must have a short title and content. You can use body text, bullet lists, and numbered lists as content.

Placement

The accordion list can be placed wherever you like in the main section. Think about what’s logical for the reader.

Fact box

The fact box is intended for explaining concepts, presenting brief facts, or giving a short version of the most important content on the page. We recommend a maximum of one fact box per page.

Title (required)

Create a short title that describes what can be found in the fact box.

Description (required)

Keep the description as short as possible.

Actions

You can add links or buttons. Rule of thumb: links for navigation, buttons for actions. You can have a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 2. For each action you must provide a URL and a link or button title.

Placement

The fact box can be placed wherever you like in the main section. It often makes sense to place it early on the page.

Contact box

You can only add one contact box per page. Only fill in the fields that are relevant – fields left empty are hidden automatically.

Title (required)

Create a short title that describes what can be found in the contact box.

Description

Keep the description as short as possible.

Phone number

Provide the contact point’s phone number. You can provide a maximum of 2 numbers.

Email

Provide the contact point’s email address. You can provide a maximum of 2 addresses.

Visiting address

Provide a physical address if relevant. You can also add a link from Mazemap.

Opening hours

Briefly describe which days and times it’s open. Mention special opening hours if needed, e.g. public holidays. Avoid abbreviations and use the Norwegian time format.

Actions

You can add links or buttons. Rule of thumb: links for navigation, buttons for actions. You can have a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 2. For each action you must provide a URL and a link or button title.

Placement

The contact box can be placed wherever you like in the main section. Think about what’s logical for the reader.

Link list

The link list is intended for pointing to related pages within the page’s topic. We recommend a maximum of one link list per page.

Title (required)

Create a short title that describes what can be found in the link list.

Links (required)

Limit the number of links and minimize links leading away from uib.no. For each link you must provide a link title and URL.

Placement

The link list can be placed wherever you like in the main section. It usually makes the most sense to place it last on the page.

Part 3: The page after publishing

Other elements that are visible once the page is published.

Feedback box

All info pages have a feedback box at the bottom of the page. Here visitors can give feedback on the content, so you can improve it over time. Currently, only editors have access to the feedback.
